Psoriasis is a skin disorder that can affect any part of the skin including nails and scalp. This is chronic, genetic, noncontiguous skin disease that may appear in many different forms.

What percentage of population is affected by psoriasis?

Around 2% of world population is believed to be affected by this disease. Although this is an estimate and actual figure may vary from country to country.

How many types of psoriasis are known?

Psoriasis may be of several types. The most common type of psoriasis includes plaque,pustular, erythrodermic, guttate and inverse psoriasis. All can further be categorized into mild, moderate or severe psoriasis depending on the condition of patients.

How psoriasis affects patient’s mental health?

All forms of psoriasis lead to some form of depression, stress or anxiety to the patients. These suffering will further increases psoriasis. This will be a continuous phenomenon and will increase both mental depression and psoriasis.

What types of treatments are available?

The following three methods of treatments are available

  • Topical: This method of treatment is chosen if psoriasis is of mild to moderate in nature and a lotion or cream is applied to the skin.
  • Phototherapy: This method of treatment is selected for moderate to severe psoriasis patients and usually ultraviolet rays are allowed to pass through affected areas of skin.
  • Systemic: This method of treatment is applied for moderate to severe patients or patients suffering from disabling psoriasis. Patients are given oral medicines, or injections or infusion.

What are the drawbacks of these therapies?

The drawback of topical therapy is that some topical solutions are messy and may stain clothing, skin. Phototherapy requires regular visit to the clinics for months and systemic therapy has several serious side effects.

So to overcome these drawbacks, therapies are rotated to get maximum benefit to the patients. However if one therapy or combination of therapy is suitable for one patient, it may not necessarily benefits other.
