Stretches that target specific areas of the feet can help to prevent foot pain. For example, the plantar fascia, an extension of the Achilles tendon, is a tough ligament-like sheet of tissue that extends from the heel bone to the base of the toes. The plantar fascia is highly susceptible to pain and inflammation. Try the Achilles-heel stretch to prevent injury to the plantar fascia. Stand on the bottom step of a flight of stairs, with the balls of feet on the step, lower heels until you feel a stretch in calves. Do this exercise three or four times a day, progressively holding the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds.

Whatever ankle brace or support you choose, it needs to be worn until the ankle is stable, which may take weeks to months. You can also wear an ankle brace when navigating on irregular terrain well past the time of injury.

People with pronating feet are at risk for developing overuse injuries, such as ankle and Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, heel and kneecap pain, and heel spurs. People who have excessive pronation are said to have flat feet. They are particularly sensitive to overuse injuries such as stress fractures and tendonitis. The problem of pronation or 'flat feet' will not go away for you were, most likely, born with it.

Huntsville, Alabama: My heel is in constant pain. I went to Dr. and had xray and cortozone shot about 6 weeks ago. No bone spurs were a shown. Now it is hearting badly again, it is sore and I can't put weight or walk without pain. My sole is also now sore which was not the case at first. I have high arches and have bought arch supports and put in my shoes. These seem to help a little. What can I do? I cannot walk without favoring that side. Thanks. Ben

When your feet are hot they produce a lot of sweat. When feet spend a lot of time inside shoes (especially inside joggers and 'sneakers' with synthetic socks), the hot sweaty environment softens the toenail (making it more likely to break and form spikes) and provides an ideal environment for infection to get going.
